The exceptional reign of Alfonso VII (1126-1157) reached one of its highest points with his imperial coronation in León (1135) and his subsequent military conquests, which confirmed his political primacy among the Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula. His coinage is extensive and varied, and this piece is linked to his final period, in which the image of the lion remains prominent—not yet as a heraldic symbol, but as an identification of the supreme king of beasts with the king of men, that is, himself, reflected in the legend IMPERATOR surrounding the Latin cross, from which hang the initials of his title, IN-PE, while the lion’s head is encircled by the text LEONI. The peculiarity of this piece, besides the letters hanging from the cross, is the placement of a small L at the beginning of the legends on both obverse and reverse, which we identify as the mintmark of Lugo (there are other pieces with the marks B and O), and of the variety with the letters A-N hanging from the cross, one piece also bears the L mark. This coin is unique and appears photographed in the main publications and specialised websites on Hispano-Christian medieval coinage.
