Emperor Claudius held deep admiration for his father, Nero Claudius Drusus Germanicus, the second son of Livia. While pregnant with Drusus, Livia divorced her husband to marry Octavian immediately after giving birth. Drusus the Elder earned great military prestige, and after his death during a campaign (9 BC), his body was interred in the Mausoleum of Augustus. In his honour, the Senate erected a commemorative arch on the Via Appia, bestowing upon him the title “Germanicus”, a name his descendants would be entitled to bear. He was married to Antonia Minor, daughter of Mark Antony and Octavia, and was the father of Germanicus, Claudius, and Livilla. This coin depicts the commemorative arch, topped with an equestrian statue of Drusus flanked by two trophies and bearing his triumphal title.
