CHARLES IV

CARLOS IV (1788-1808). 8 escudos. Sevilla. 1790. C. AU 27,1 g. 36,3 mm. VI-1437; AC-1793. R.B.O. EBC/EBC+. Muy rara.

The first onzas bearing the name of Charles IV were struck in Madrid in December 1788. Production expanded to other mints in 1789, both in Spain and the Americas, though initially still using the bust of Charles III. In Seville, the first onzas were not minted until 1790, and they are extremely scarce—just like those from 1791. In fact, throughout the entire reign, onzas were struck in Seville only during those two years, making it the rarest mint for onzas of this reign. A very rare coin, with only a few known pieces.
