This piece is connected with the emperor's victories in the East against the Parthians, which led to the capture of Ctesiphon and the creation of the province of Mesopotamia. These successes earned him his eleventh imperial acclamation and the title Parthicus Maximus, between late 197 and early 198, as reflected in the obverse legend. The reverse shows the figure of Victory, while the legend includes the traditional imperial titles, together with a reference to his second consulship and his ninth tribunician power, which dates the coin to the year 200. This conquest brought him considerable benefits, which he used to improve the quality of life of the soldiers, to increase the number of legions, and to establish new benefits and honours for the troops and their officers. The emperor did not return to Rome until 203, leaving the East fully pacified; this was commemorated by the erection of the famous triumphal arch that bears his name.
