This die, apparently found in southern France, specifically in the department of Hautes-Pyrenees, was used to produce the abundant series of denarii from the mint of Turiasu characterized by the Iberian signs Ka S Tu around its distinctive bearded male head. This issue is dated to c. 120-80 BC. The piece shows intense traces of use, with a significant degree of wear, especially visible in the almost total loss of the border. Much of the detail of the hair, necklace and beard has also been lost. The fact that it is an obverse die, and therefore would have been set into the anvil in a passive position, receiving the blow, would have caused this intense wear without causing it to break. We are dealing with an object of exceptional rarity, since very few coin dies have survived, not only in the Iberian Peninsula but throughout the classical world. This rarity is increased by the fact that most dies that have come down to us originate from counterfeiters' workshops. That is not the case with this specimen, since, thanks to the exhaustive die study carried out by Dr M. Gozalbes in his monograph on the Turiasu mint, at least a dozen denarii struck with this die have been identified with complete certainty, pieces whose authenticity is beyond doubt. The question nevertheless remains as to how an authentic die left the mint and ended up in a place as distant as southern Gaul. It may have been stolen, or it may have ceased to be valid for some reason unknown to us.
