After the rapid conquest of the kingdom of Navarre by King Ferdinand, with papal support (1512), and his subsequent acceptance as monarch by the Cortes (March 1513), the new coinage began to be struck in accordance with the Ordinances of 19 June 1513. These stipulated that the coins were to be produced with the same fineness and weight as those struck at the mints of Burgos and Zaragoza. The king confirmed Belenguer Daoyz as Master of the Pamplona mint, a post he had held since 1503, while appointing Juan Miguel Garces de Cascante as Warden of the mint. The new gold coinage therefore followed the ducat system, although the official name of the piece was “real de oro”. Shortly afterwards, in the ordinance of 3 September 1513, the manufacture of its multiples was regulated, specifically the two-real piece, formally called a gold doblon. Although not mentioned in the ordinance, quadruple ducats were also struck; in this regard one should recall the issues of the same value being made in the king's name at both Zaragoza and Valencia. All the gold pieces produced in Pamplona share the same typology: the crowned portrait of King Ferdinand, surrounded by his title as King of Navarre and as much of the Aragonese title as could be fitted, while the reverse shows the crowned shield of the kingdom, framed or unframed, with the traditional Navarrese coin legend SIT NOMEN DOMINUS BENEDICTUM. In 1515 King Ferdinand decided that the succession to the throne of Navarre should be united with that of Castile (Cortes of Burgos, June), while the kingdom retained its own institutions and coinage.
