Following the successful uprising of the Duke of Braganza against the government of Philip IV and his subsequent accession to the Portuguese throne, the new administration began minting its own coinage. Initially, the highest-denomination coin was the Four Cruzados piece (3,000 réis), authorized by law on 29 March 1642. However, in the years that followed, it became necessary to increase the value of these coins, and by decree of 19 May 1643 their value was raised to 3,500 réis. During the reign of Afonso VI, a further revaluation was ordered. Under the Law of 20 November 1662, these coins were assigned a value of 4,000 réis. The legislation also required them to be countermarked with a crowned shield surrounded by dots, bearing within it the numeral “4”, indicating the new value of four thousand réis. During the regency of Prince Pedro, a further increase of 10% in the value of these gold coins was approved. By decree of 12 April 1668, a new countermark was ordered to be applied, reflecting their revised value of 4,400 réis. This 1642 specimen, bearing both of these countermarks, is an exceptionally rare coin.
