8 escudos Guatemala 1789, 1790, 1794, 1797 and 1801 over 1797
Among the doubloons, the rarest mint of this period is Guatemala. During the reign of Charles IV, until 1790 and by virtue of the Royal Decree of 24 December 1788, the portrait of Charles III continued to be used on the coinage, with only the regnal numeral altered so as not to interrupt production. The new dies bearing the king's own portrait, the work of Pedro Gonzalez de Sepulveda, were not approved until 20 July 1789. From 1791 onward, all coins of this sovereign display the new portrait and the numeral IIII instead of IV. Doubloons were struck only in 1794, 1797 and 1801 (over 1797), always under the assayer Manuel Eusebio Sanchez (M).
