After the first bust of the king had been created, with armour and mantle and used only on the Cadiz doubloons of 1811, Felix Sagau was ordered to produce another portrait, this time bare and laureate in the Roman manner, that is, in heroic style. It was distributed to the various peninsular and American mints.
In Guatemala the dies were received in 1813, but dated 1811, and no effort was made to alter the date. Indeed, in order to comply with the order that the monarch should have coinage struck in the first year of his reign, doubloons dated 1808 were produced; thus, in 1813, doubloons were made bearing the dates 1808 and 1811.
