The definitive conquest of the Suevic Kingdom of Galicia took place during the final years of King Leovigild’s reign (585), when he seized the entire territory along with the royal treasury. As late as 586, there were still Suevic uprisings against Visigothic rule, most notably one led by Malaric, who was ultimately defeated and captured by the Visigoths, marking the official pacification of the former kingdom. However, Visigothic presence had to be made visibly permanent. For a significant period, the kings of Toledo minted coins in numerous Galician mints as a symbol of power and sovereignty over this recently annexed territory, starting with Leovigild himself (d. 586). An important collection of Galician coins of various Visigothic kings is on display here, which can be divided into two main groups: The first reflects the ongoing need to strike coinage across many mints in the territory to visibly assert Visigothic control over the former Suevic kingdom. This group includes extremely rare or even unique issues of Recared (Bracara, Lucu, and Portocale), Witteric (Senabria), Gundemar (Georres), Sisebut (Aurense, Bracara, Georres, Laetera, Tude, and Tulluco), and Suinthila (Georres, Lucu, and Tude), with mint locations such as Braga, Lugo, Porto, Puebla de Sanabria, Puebla de Valdeorras, Ourense, and Tuy, as well as unidentified sites like Laetera and Tulluco. The second group belongs to the final phase of the Visigothic Kingdom, when Visigothic control was fully consolidated. Galician mints by this time operated in line with those in the rest of the Toledan realm. Yet the pieces offered here are extraordinarily rare, such as the only known coins from Tude (Wamba and Egica/Witiza) or the extremely rare coin of Bracara (Egica/Witiza).
