Son of Decius and Herennia Etruscilla. He was named Caesar in May 251, around the same time his older brother, Herennius Etruscus, was named co-emperor. After the deaths of Decius and his brother at the hands of the Goths in the Battle of Abritus, the legions proclaimed Trebonianus Gallus emperor. Gallus almost immediately appointed Hostilian as co-emperor (July 251) and named his own son, Volusianus, Caesar. Hostilian died in November 251, either from a plague epidemic or assassinated by Trebonianus. This coin dates from his time as Princeps Iuventutis.
