Probus, a native of Pannonia and commander of the eastern legions, was proclaimed emperor by his troops upon the death of Tacitus (276). He soon consolidated his rule thanks to his victories over barbarian invaders in Gaul and Illyricum (277-278), for which he was granted the triumphal title Gothicus. This coin is associated with those successful campaigns. In the following years, he proved to be a highly capable military leader but faced numerous uprisings. Ultimately, he was assassinated by his own troops (282) during the rebellion of Carus.
