The last coinage officially struck under imperial authority at a mint in Hispania. The usurper Maximus was proclaimed emperor by the magister militum Gerontius, who had previously served under Constantine III. Gerontius, having allied himself with the Suebi, Vandals, and Alans, betrayed Constantine III and proclaimed Maximus emperor. From Tarraco, Maximus governed much of the province of Tarraconensis, though he remained under Gerontius’s authority. Gerontius’s ultimate goal was to seize control of Gaul, but when he was defeated by Constantine III, his influence collapsed, forcing him to retreat into Germanic-controlled territories in Hispania. His coins were minted in Barcino, and both silver and bronze issues are known, which bear the mint mark S(acra) M(oneta) B(arcinonensis). The silver coins feature an imperial portrait and his name on the obverse, while the reverse depicts the seated figure of Roma with the legend VICTORIA AVGVSTA. The three GGG likely allude to Maximus’s attempt to associate himself with the two legitimate emperors of 411: Honorius in the West and Theodosius II in the East. These silver pieces were likely used to pay Gerontius’s troops and formed part of the traditional donativum distributed upon an emperor’s accession. They are generally of poor quality, reflecting the rushed and improvised nature of the emission and the mint that produced them.
